I picked up an artist paint brush and applied oil paint to a canvas for the very first time in February of 2018. It was one of those defining moments and I knew I had found a connection.
Born in The Netherlands and emigrated to New Zealand. Educated as a scientist (Ph.D. chemistry) in The Netherlands, Canada and the USA. A professional career as a research scientist in various roles in New Zealand and The Netherlands.
Without any artistic training I feel that I can allow my instinct and observational skills, honed by my scientific background, guide the creative artistic process. My art is driven by a deeply ingrained desire to “create beautiful things” and “to see what is really there”. I am fascinated with the process of translating the observed into a stroke of paint on a canvas and this has led me to paint mostly realism in oil.
With a background in chemistry I am naturally interested in the chemistry of paints and mediums. As a result I have embarked on a mission to make my own paint and mediums. Initially to use myself but in the near future I will make these paints and mediums avaliable for purchase in New Zealand. That's the plan anyway.
